Leon Löwentraut: ‘Believe in Progress’
In his remarkable speech at the opening of the exhibition, the 26-year-old artist emphasises that it is about his works and not about himself - they are the protagonists of the evening.
His theme: the past, the ephemeral and the urge to constantly reinvent oneself and thus leave the old behind and - of course - the departure into new worlds. Leon Löwentraut in his speech: ‘I think change is good because you don't stand still.’ He continued: ‘I no longer have the status of a child prodigy, and I'm happy about that.’
The inner struggle that this entails, the permanent struggle with himself and his art, becomes clear, for example, in his painting ‘Floating Tears of an Artist’ - with a blurred background. Löwentraut: ‘I show the transience here through the technique. Transience also has a lot to do with experience, which is also transient.’
Other works show other stylistic elements: geometric shapes, straight lines and a flat application of colour set the stage for his figures painted with an expressive gesture - often inspired by people who are particularly close to his heart. His girlfriend Paula Partl can be seen in two of the works. Leon Löwentraut: ‘Her character and her aura inspire me.’
The ‘Believe in Progress’ exhibition comprises around 20 paintings, five of his famous charcoal drawings, two sculptures and the result of a spontaneous painting performance. Most of the unique pieces were created in his studio in Portugal. The exhibition runs until 22 September 2024.
Each painting offers an insight into Löwentraut's creative process and emphasises themes such as change and forward movement. The exhibition reflects his artistic progression and highlights his development in concept, style and technique.
